Business Jacket upcycle to biker jacket

Well Hello Again

I really leave far too long a time between posts. and hello and welcome to new subscribers…… I was really hoping I would have this remake done months ago…. but as most of you know sewing and meditation nearly go hand in hand so while I was remaking this jacket, I thought about sewing, making and remaking far too much. But more on that later.

The Make

This Jacket was from the ‘unsalable’ pieces I took last year from the VdeP. It was a double breasted wool jacket without trousers, so it probably went to the unsalable for that reason. The wool is ‘lush’ and the jacket would have been ‘made’ for a local department store in Galway, which I found rather endearing. Originally the remake was to become a chore jacket, but as I opened up the jacket the shaping and inconvenient pockets left me with very little fabric for a slouchy style jacket. I opted instead for a biker jacket – Vogue Elements 7266 – a pattern I had wanted to make for a good while.

The cut was fairly okay. one of the panels had to be cut in two, and all in all it was cut in a day and sewn this far in a day, the lining was another day. I got carried away with the lining and tried to reuse the original but its fairly patched together so I don’t think I would do this again.

There is very little to finish, and yet I can’t quite yet. I have the zip tacked in place and the collar and band prepped to attach.

So why is it not? well those pesky meditations! As some of you may have noted in previous posts, I enjoy doing this blog, but feel I have lost direction a bit as I am trying to balance work and sewing – as well as having sufficient clothes in my own wardrobe. I have also been teaching sewing in the last 2 years and really enjoy that. However, 2 things really have me preoccupied. The first was getting those unsaleable clothes from the VdeP (Vincent dePaul Sort Centre). There was so much there in the sort room – I really thought I wouldn’t be shocked by the volumes but I was…. and to top it all off – so much Shein Sh*t). The second preoccupation was a talk I gave for this years fashion revolution (about fast fashion Davitt and Ghandi). As a BTW – this talk will be put up on youtube in the coming months. Both of these elements got me thinking even more on fast fashion, sustainability….what do you do when you like clothes, but don’t want it costing the earth…..

So where next….. I will continue remaking, posting and teaching. However, I am pivoting a few things, and hopefully will be able to share it with you soon……..Wish me luck!

We learn so much from refashion clothes and it can be addictive but oh so enjoyable to handle long forgotten lovely fabrics. Keep doing what you enjoy and teaching others as you are an inspriation for them.
